Famous People!
As a culmination of their study on characterization, senior drama students
from the semester 2 Theatre Performance 11/12 class, transformed themselves
into a wide selection of famous people. The assignment included researching
their chosen “famous person”, selecting production elements
to help them “transform” (costume, make up, hair, props, etc.),
and then being interviewed in front of the class by their “talk
show host” teacher. Who knew ADSS had so many celebrities!

Mime Faces!
Drama 10 students
studied the art of Mime. They created their own solo, paired, and group
mime scenes. They learned to mime all their props and not to break their
“clic”. They maintained the “no human sounds”
rule and found out about the world’s greatest mime, Marcel Marceau!.
To finish off the unit, they experimented with traditional mime make up
(white face) and made themselves into fabulous looking mimes!

Drama Students Volunteering!
Millwort School of Magic
A Big Millwort School of Magic THANK-YOU to the wonderful ADSS drama
students who took on the roles of Prefects, Wizards, Fortune Tellers,
and Professors over the Thanksgiving Weekend. The children loved you!!!
For the past four years, ADSS drama students have helped this wonderful
Alberni Valley Museum sponsored event, in which the historic site of
McLean Mill is transformed into the “Millwort School of Magic”
for children and their parents. As in the past, the drama students this
year did a fabulous job of making the whole fantasy and magic of the
event come alive!
All students that were involved in the Millwort weekend should see Mrs.
R for their “certificates of participation” and be sure
to register their hours with the Career Center. They can apply this
experience as part of their portfolio evidence for volunteer hours and
community service.

ADSS Drama Students
play VICTIMS!
15 ADSS Drama Students volunteered their
time on Saturday, Oct. 21st, 2006, to be “victims” in Port
Alberni’s staged Multi-Casualty Incident Day. They were each given
a scenario of the age of their “character” and then the
injury they were to have acquired from a mock “explosion”
on a large vessel in the waters off of Harbour Quay. With the magic
of make up and, of course, great acting skills, they all assumed their
roles on board the “ship” and then were rescued by the various
Emergency services in the Valley. From badly burned to broken bones
to having a baby, they did it all and greatly contributed to the success
of this very important training exercise for Port Alberni’s emergency
response teams.
All these students received official Certificates of Participation from
the B.C. Ambulance Service and can use these to add to their Portfolio
“evidence” for volunteer hours and work experience.

Annual
ADSS Drama Club Field Trip to Bard on the Beach!
Each year, the ADSS Drama Club sponsors a field trip to Vancouver to see
one of Shakespeare’s plays performed by Bard on the Beach. This
year’s play was the comedy, “A Midsummer’s Night Dream”.
As usual, this very professional theatre company did an excellent job
and the students really enjoyed the play. It is performed in the company’s
huge tent that is set up below the Vancouver Planetarium and just above
Kitsalano Beach. Being that it is so close to Granville Island, part of
the field trip always includes students walking over to this wonderful
area for lunch and a browse through the markets and craft stores. The
two other components of the trip are a drive through Stanley Park with
a picture taking moment under the “hollow tree” and a dinner
break before the ferry at West Vancouver’s big shopping center,
the Park Royal Mall.
Students on this trip were wonderfully behaved and proved once again that
it should be an annual Drama Club field trip. One more bonus to the trip
is that students may use this experience for their Portfolio Aspect 1.1,
a reflection on an art form!

Armada Improv Update!
So far, there are sixteen very dedicated “improvisers”
who have attended the intensive improv training sessions and/or traveled
up to Courtney for the North Island Regional Canadian Improv Workshop.
While all these students can consider themselves a part of the “Armada
Improv Team”, a core of eight of the students will be selected
to be the “competitive core” that will compete at the Regional
CIG tournaments.
On Sunday, Dec. 10th (11:30am to 3:30 am in the Drama Room) David Morris,
from the Canadian Improv Games, is coming over from Vancouver to ADSS
to give our students a special 4 hour workshop. It is hoped this session
will give us the “edge” in the upcoming CIG Regional Exhibition
Tournament in Courtney on Dec. 22nd.

Drama Club’s
Field Trip to “Charlotte’s Web” cancelled
Due to dangerous driving conditions, the much anticipated Field Trip
to see “Charlotte’s Web” in Victoria was first postponed
(Tuesday, Dec. 12th) and then cancelled (Friday, Dec. 15th). The safety
of students was felt to be at risk in both cases.
Mrs. Robertson will hand back refunds to all the students that had
signed up and paid for the trip and attempt will be made to find another
theatrical production to attend in the New Year.
